The death penalty is prohibited in countries and even in
some states around the world. Many countries and even a few states in the
United States have not allowed the death penalty to happen. The United States,
China, and Iran are some countries that still allow death penalty unlike the
European union because the charter of human rights prevented the death penalty
from happening. Other countries that oppose the death penalty are New Zealand,
Australia, and Puerto Rico. They all follow the Christian passage and the
teachings of Jesus. They follow this passage not only because they feel it
violates human rights, but because the advancements in DNA testing has proved
the innocence of many criminals in death row. It would be unfair and unjust to
kill a man who did not commit any crime. Many Christians disagree with the
passage, but I on the other hand agree with it. We should not return evil for evil
because the world would end up becoming a never ending circle of hate. The
United States should use the values used in England and eliminate the death
penalty.
I agree with your sentiments regarding the death penalty. When I read the list of countries where it is still practiced legally I was a bit shocked. Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China... Some of these countries still practice Sharia Law, and the living conditions in many parts of rural China are terrible. I think it's very strange that the US aligns itself with these countries on such a controversial isssue. I'm also concerned about the logic that allows some Christians to want to outlaw abortion while pursuing the death penalty. There seems to be something wrong with that line of thuoght.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI thought your posting was insightful. It was interesting to learn that New Zealand, Puerto Rico, and Australia all oppose the death penalty. I agree with you that we should not “return evil for evil”. I have never been a subscriber to the thought process of an eye for an eye. You make a good point that if we maintain a pattern of causing harm to those who have caused harm to others it becomes a “never ending circle of hate”. One of the main reasons I think that the death penalty should be abolished is due to the fact that there have been cases of convicted felons on death row that have been acquitted of their crimes since the advancement of DNA testing. And, who are any of us to decide when, where, and how a person dies?
