Novello

Dr. Novello was a Surgeon General of the United States, becoming the first Hispanic and woman to acquire this position. Dr. Novello mainly focused on things that diminished peoples’ health such as AIDS, underage drinking, and smoking. She was really into stopping smoking and even criticized smoking industries blaming them for more and more younger people getting into smoking due to their cartoons of people smoking to make it look like smoking is fun. I saw that Dr. Novello used cause and effect reasoning because Dr. Novello saw that smoking statistics went up when the cartoon camel ad started playing on tv. She used statistics and quotes from doctors to try and strengthen her argument. She concluded that statistics showed that smoking went up in children due to the fact that the smoking cartoon camel commercials were gaining the youths’ interests in smoking. Novello protested and issued bans to try and prevent tobacco ads that was targeting kids.
